| PROJECT DESCRIPTION | |
| Construct a double-track railroad bridge over a four-lane depressed roadway on Baldwin Avenue in El Monte, which carries 28,000 vehicles a day including substantial truck traffic and connects Interstates 10 and 210. The at-grade crossing is traversed by 14 freight trains per day and six passenger trains per week. Landscaping will be installed south of the tracks and retaining walls north of the tracks. Bessie Avenue will end in cul-de-sacs with a new pedestrian bridge built across Baldwin Avenue. | |
| PROJECT STATUS | |
| The Baldwin Ave. grade separation design was completed in December 2004. Environmental approvals were received and right-of-way acquisition is nearly complete. The cost is estimated at $85.2 million. A construction contract is anticipated to be awarded in 2012. | |
| PROJECT IMPACTS | |
| Project spending is projected to create 1,370 full-time equivalent jobs. The Federal Railroad Administration has recorded two train-vehicle collisions at the crossing in the past 10 years. The project will eliminate a highway-rail at-grade crossing, the potential for train-vehicle collisions, delays for emergency responders and reduce emissions and locomotive horn and crossing gate noise. Baldwin Avenue will be closed between Rose and Gidley streets during the construction period of 18 to 24 months. Temple City Blvd. and Arden Drive via Lower Azusa Rd. and Valley Blvd. will be used as detour routes. Local access for businesses and residences will be provided. | |
