Main Street - City of Pomona

| Electronic message signs triggered by oncoming trains will direct motorists and emergency vehicles to nearby underpasses when crossings are blocked by trains. |
| PROJECT DESCRIPTION | |
| The IR/RIS is a pilot program in Pomona to utilize new technologies that improve advanced train detection to better control traffic and reduce motorist delay. The IR/RIS improvements will be installed at five crossings: Hamilton Boulevard, Park Avenue, Main Street, Palomares Street, and San Antonio Avenue. The system will detect when a slow-moving train is approaching and send messages to a series of electronic display signs near the five crossings directing motorists and emergency vehicles to avoid clogged streets and use nearby underpasses. | |
| PROJECT STATUS | |
| Construction and installation of the IR/RIS network began in December 2003. The network will connect traffic signals in downtown Pomona to the City of Pomona’s new Traffic Management Center. The advanced train detection system was installed and tied into the Traffic Management Center by radio and wire communications equipment. The system is being tested and will be operational by Fall 2004. | |
| PROJECT IMPACTS | |
| The project will reduce congestion and improve safety at grade crossings by redirecting vehicle traffic to underpasses. |
