| PROJECT DESCRIPTION | |
Construct a six-lane roadway underpass and double-track railway bridge to completely grade separate Nogales Street with the railroad (Los Angeles Subdivision) between San Jose Avenue and Gale Avenue/Walnut Drive North. Gale Avenue and Walnut Drive will be widened in the vicinity of Nogales Street to two lanes in each direction to ease a traffic chokepoint prior to use as a temporary detour route during construction. |
|
| PROJECT STATUS | |
Environmental approvals have been received and acquisition of right of way has commenced. Project design is being updated. Construction is expected to start in 2011. The overall cost of the project is estimated at $88.1 million. |
|
| PROJECT IMPACTS | |
Project construction is projected to create 1,480 full-time equivalent jobs. The project will reduce congestion, air pollution and locomotive horn and crossing bell noise. Currently, approximately 33 trains a day travel on two tracks at speeds of up to 75 miles per hour and Nogales Street carries about 45,000 vehicles per day. Two train-vehicle accidents have occurred in the past five years (2003-2007). The project will eliminate delays for emergency responders and the potential for crossing collisions, estimated at one every four years. Nogales Street between San Jose Avenue and Gale Avenue/Walnut Drive North will be closed during construction. ACE is working with local jurisdictions to finalize traffic detour arrangements via a new temporary crossing near Charlie Road. North-South traffic will be encouraged to use Fairway Drive and Fullerton Road. |
