Project Description
The Nogales Street Grade Separation Project (LA Subdivision) will lower Nogales Street beneath the existing railroad tracks and also widen Gale Ave/Walnut Drive to two lanes in each direction. The existing at-grade crossing is located between San Jose Avenue and Gale Avenue/Walnut Drive. Construction will involve building or installing a new roadway and railroad bridge, traffic signals, intersection, and relocation of utilities.
Project Status
The Nogales Street Grade Separation (LA Sub) design was completed in January 2005 and submitted to Los Angeles County. The estimated overall cost of the project is 70.2 million.

Project Impacts
The project will eliminate the possibility of train/vehicle collisions, reduce congestion and air pollution, and eliminate train horn noise. Approximately 33 trains a day travel on two tracks at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour. The Nogales grade crossing has had 2 incidents in the past 5 years (2003-2007). The Federal Railroad Administration predicts that the probability of a collision between a train and a vehicle at the Nogales crossing is 25% in a given year.

Nogales Street between San Jose Avenue and Gale Avenue/Walnut Drive will be closed during construction. A temporary two-lane detour road along Otterbein Avenue will be constructed.
